For the Apatani tribe, agriculture is not just a livelihood but the very foundation of community life, and Dree is their way of honouring it. The festival is dedicated to five deities – Danyi, Metii, Tamu, Mepin, and Meder – each invoked to protect crops from pests and calamities and to bless the fields with a rich harvest. It is, at its heart, a festival of gratitude and hope woven into ritual.
🏡 Rituals of the Village Priests
The ceremonies of Dree are carried out by a small group of local priests known as the Gaon Burhas, who craft ritual figures from bamboo to represent the gods being worshipped. Offerings of eggs, poultry, and animals are made as part of the rites, watched over by the wider community in a tradition passed down through generations of Apatani life in Ziro.
🎶 Dance, Feast, and Daminda
Once the rituals conclude, the festival opens into celebration. The Daminda, a ritualistic folk dance performed with linked feet, marks both the beginning and end of Dree, drawing in villagers of every age. Feasting follows, with cucumber, apong (traditional rice beer), and yatang – rice pudding cooked in bamboo – shared generously as prasad among everyone present.
