Lathmar Holi : The Unique Colour Festival Of India

India is known for its incredible diversity, vibrant traditions, and colorful festivals, but beyond its famous landmarks lies a treasure trove of unique cultural experiences waiting to be explored. One such extraordinary celebration is Lathmar Holi, often referred to as the "Holi of Sticks." Held annually in the twin towns of Barsana and Nandgaon in Uttar Pradesh, Lathmar Holi is a spectacular reenactment of divine playfulness, where women joyfully strike men with sticks amid colors, music, and devotion.

Lathmar Holi, Barsana & Nandgaon

Cultural Significance

Not just Holi.
A legend reenacted.

Lathmar Holi is far more than a colourful spectacle. It is a living reenactment of the legend of Radha and Krishna — where, tradition holds, Krishna once travelled from Nandgaon to Barsana to tease Radha and her friends, only to be playfully driven away with sticks.

Every year since, the women of Barsana and men of Nandgaon restage this affectionate rivalry with wooden sticks, shields, colour, and song, in a festival found nowhere else in India.

Genuine Community Connection

An invitation, not a show.

Through our exclusive local network, we connect travelers with Braj families in Barsana and Nandgaon who welcome guests into their homes, their courtyards, and the days of preparation that lead into the festival itself.

This is not a performance staged for cameras. It is a genuine village celebration, offering rare access to a tradition most travelers only ever see in photographs.

Days of Colour & Celebration

What the days hold

During the days integrated within a broader itinerary, guests become part of the festival's build-up and its climax. They may:

Watch the women of Barsana playfully strike shielded men with wooden lathis in the courtyard of the Radha Rani temple. Join folk singers performing traditional Holi songs known as Holi ke geet. Be drenched in clouds of coloured powder and water alongside villagers dressed in festive Braj attire. Share sweets and a community feast once the colour settles into evening.

A Festival of Contrasts

Between mischief and devotion

The experience reveals India in its most exuberant form — a festival that moves between playful chaos and deep devotion within a single day.

By Day

The Colour Storm

Temple courtyards filled with clouds of gulal, laughter, and the rhythmic clash of sticks on shields.

By Evening

The Songs Settle

As colour fades, devotional singing and lantern-lit streets bring the day to a gentler close.

The Villages

Barsana & Nandgaon

A centuries-old, good-natured rivalry between Radha's village and Krishna's, re-enacted with affection.

The People

Joy Without Reserve

An unfiltered, full-hearted hospitality where every visitor is pulled straight into the celebration.

A Sense of Belonging

Not watched. Joined.

What makes this experience truly exceptional is that no one stays on the sidelines. Rather than photographing the colour from a distance, guests are pulled into the courtyard, handed a shield or a fistful of gulal, and welcomed into a celebration that has belonged to these villages for generations.

They leave not simply having seen Lathmar Holi, but having been part of it.
