Overview
Poonch is a historically layered town in the Jammu division, close to the Line of Control at the foothills of the Pir Panjal range. Often called "Mini Kashmir," it traces its origins to legends connecting it to Maharishi Pulastya, grandfather of Ravana, and carries the imposing Poonch Fort, mountain streams, and forests of fir, deodar and pine across the surrounding hills.
The town's role as a princely seat under successive dynasties, its position on the historic Mughal Road connecting Jammu to the Kashmir Valley, and its tapestry of Hindu, Sikh and Sufi shrines give it a depth of narrative that few other towns in the border region can match.

Best Time to Visit
April to October, spanning spring through autumn, is the most favourable window, with average temperatures between roughly 15°C and 30°C — pleasant for exploring the fort, surrounding villages and the Mughal Road without heavy rainfall or extreme cold. Winter brings a much sharper chill, particularly across higher passes and villages within the district, making road travel through areas such as Peer Ki Gali considerably more difficult.
Connectivity
Poonch sits roughly 235km northwest of Jammu city via National Highway 144A through Rajouri, with regular bus services from Jammu, Srinagar and other nearby towns.
The nearest airport and railway station are both at Jammu, requiring onward road travel. Poonch also connects onward to the Kashmir Valley via the historic Mughal Road, passing through Bufliaz and Shopian — making the town a practical staging point for both the Jammu region and the mountain route toward Kashmir.
