Forest cover across the area is dominated by deodar, pine, spruce and cedar, sustaining a cool climate through the year. On clear days, sightlines extend to the Badrinath, Kedarnath and Pir Panjal ranges. The surrounding terrain of meadows, apple orchards and forest trail networks supports both short scenic stops and longer photography- or trek-focused itineraries.

The name is understood to derive from the local term "Kufr," meaning lake. The area was developed as a summer retreat during the colonial period on account of its climate, and it has retained traditional Himachali village life in the surrounding settlements — wooden architecture, apple cultivation and a recurring festival calendar that remains visible to visiting travellers.
