Tso Moriri Lake

Overview

Tso Moriri sits on the remote Changthang Plateau, roughly 220 km from Leh, reached via Upshi, Chumathang and Mahe Bridge. It carries a distinctly lower-footfall, higher-remoteness profile than Pangong Lake — suited to operators positioning wildlife, conservation, or slow-travel itineraries rather than standard sightseeing circuits.

Natural Landscape

The lake's water shifts from deep blue to turquoise and emerald tones through the day, set against barren mountains, alpine meadows and the open Changthang plateau. It freezes completely in winter, and summer brings alpine flowers and migratory bird arrivals to the surrounding grasslands.

History & Culture

The lake has long been central to the life of the Changpa, a semi-nomadic pastoral community raising pashmina goats, yaks and sheep across Changthang. It is regarded as sacred by local Buddhist communities, and Korzok Monastery, one of the highest monasteries in the world, has served as a religious centre for centuries.

Conservation Status

Tso Moriri is protected under the Tso Moriri Wetland Conservation Reserve, preserving both its ecosystem and the surrounding cultural heritage — a relevant positioning point for conservation-minded or slow-travel trade partners.
