Kongthong is a small Khasi Hills settlement built around a single, well-documented oral custom: each person is given a unique whistled tune by their mother shortly after birth, used by family and neighbors in place of a spoken name across the surrounding hills. The practice is functioning daily life, not a staged performance for visitors.
The village sits roughly 55 km from Shillong through hill terrain, with forest, bamboo groves, and waterfalls along the approach. Visitor numbers remain low relative to Meghalaya's better-known circuit stops, and homestay capacity is limited.

Operating window
October through April brings cool, dry weather suited to village walks and trekking. Monsoon (June–September) deepens the surrounding greenery and waterfalls but can leave trekking routes slippery.
